About

Hi I am Ed,
I was born in The Hague in 1964 and work from my studio in Assen, the Netherlands.
I make abstract photographs. They begin in the physical world — light, a surface, a movement — but I'm not after the subject. I'm after the moment it stops being a thing and starts being a state. I enlarge it, isolate it, and hold it still until the form loosens and something quieter underneath comes through.
There's a place I've always called No Man's Land: the threshold between two states, where the edges blur. It's uncomfortable to stand there. The instinct is to run back to the familiar or leap ahead to the new. The work is what happens when I stay long enough for the noise to fall away and something clear to take its place.
I've never done one thing for long. Roughly every decade I've started over — a background in computer science and business, and a string of ventures since, from building companies to designing toys. Photography was the one constant running underneath all of it.
I showed my work for a few years, early on, and then stepped back. Not from the work — from the circuit around it. I liked making the images more than I liked the world that came with them. In 2024 I began again, on my own terms: gathering work from across the years, some of it made long ago, retitled and sequenced into series, brought into line with who I am now. It's the same body of work I once showed under the name Images from Within — seen more clearly.
I stay close to the making. Each piece is printed as a fine-art giclée and face-mounted under acrylic on Dibond — proofed by hand, the colour checked against the work until it's right, finished to last. The object matters as much as the image. It's what carries the light.
I name a work and then let it go. What you find in it is yours.

I'm self-taught. The work has to convince me first.
What I can stand behind is the work itself, made and documented to last. Every piece is produced in a limited edition or as a unique work, signed, and comes with a certificate of authenticity from the studio. Each one is printed and finished under my eye, professionally packed, and shipped worldwide — backed by a clear return policy if it isn't right for you. The full detail — editions, delivery, provenance, returns — is on the Collecting page.
You buy directly from the studio. No gallery, no middleman — just the work, and me behind it. If you'd like to see a piece in more detail, want help choosing a size for your wall, or have any question before you decide, write to me. Questions are answered directly by the studio.
